The series centers around a hip hop music and entertainment company, Empire Entertainment, and the drama among the members of the founders' family as they fight for control of the company. In Season 2, knowing Lucious won’t be held much longer in prison, Cookie and her allies within the Lyon family make a desperate attempt to seize control of the company.

"Fires of Heaven" didn't have as many OMG moments as the first two episodes of the season, but with Luscious out of prison, the show was able to get back to the bubbling soapy inter-family conflict that makes it half Shakespeare, half Dynasty.

The thing is Empire Season 2 Episode 3 was a really strong installment, even though I was basically annoyed the entire hour. That's a testament to just how good this show can be.

In a brother-against-brother civil-war showdown that's pure fantasy, cameos by two gigantic hip-hop hitmakers add some factual spice. Three episodes into its second smash season, this show has yet to screw up the mix.

All things considered, "Fires from Heaven" was a disappointing follow-up to last week's episode. There is a point when perpetual plot twists become predictable, and non-stop drama becomes rather boring.
