Season 7 begins again through a series of events where Sipowicz took advantage of extra time to thwart Sylvia and perhaps was able to experiment in order to lose some weight. Meanwhile, both Sibovich and Sorenson were able to launch a new investigation through the death of a man beaten to death by two policemen.

NYPD Blue remains so many miles above most of prime time that it's in another Zip Code. Its texture is as nubby as ever, and the city's grimy streets still run through its squad room like a five-lane highway.

It would be a shame for loyal fans to wander away now. The character development of Sipowicz, whose ex-wife was shot to death last season, may be the most dramatic change in store. But it's only one of the show's current assets.
