The fourth season begins with a long series of events with Queen Mary, who seems unsure of confidence, and tests her brother James to ensure his loyalty after hearing his meeting with John Knox at a sudden time. On the other hand, Queen Elizabeth agrees to help Lord Darnley, in an attempt to sabotage the relationship of the strong mastermind with Mary.

It burns plot at an incredible and sometimes exhausting rate; its handling of serious character beats has been uneven; its cast rotates perhaps more often than is wise. However, when it's firing on all cylinders, this show is fun as hell.
