Following the struggles and adventures of Todd Brotzman, a young courageous and miserable guy, who works at a hotel and struggles against coping with the life challenges and the cruel landlord he rents from him, but incidents come to the climX, when he finds himself involved in the murder of a millionaire and the hijack of his daughter, the thing that leads Dirk Gently, a Holistic Detective, to come to his house, in order to investigate in the case.

As a freewheeling comedy-thriller, Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency is agreeably daft entertainment even if it doesn't crib heavily from Douglas Adams' novels, serving as an incredibly loose adaptation.

The problem here is the writing, which consistently feels belabored and overtly complicated while the show itself remains largely just about Dirk and Todd and their adventures.

Dirk Gently is gorgeous, ambitious, pre-meditated chaos, a firework shot into a crowded room, or a child drawing with lipstick on the good wallpaper, grounded only by subtle performances by Elijah Wood, and Samuel Barnett as the titular detective.

It amounts to a scattershot narrative that only really works because of creator/writer Max Landis's wit. Beneath all the details is a cutting humor that, in a rare move, is actually humorous.

It's a compulsively watchable show, but its breathless, urgent tone brings it closer to E4's Misfits than to anything Adams wrote.
