The New Romantic
We live here a romantic and comedy adventure that tells the story of a girl who is still frustrated with the lack of a gentleman in her age. Perhaps it will be quite different when a senior student abandons dating to love so far, but in the end the girl tries to connect with the older man in exchange for new gifts, love and romance that we live in differently.

The New Romantic suggests, how ever you package it, there's a possibility all our wanderings might still come back to love. Maybe it speaks to some of the deepest longings of our heart.

The New Romantic is, in many aspects, an old romantic in that capital-R way. A glorification of a past age thought to be lost... Neither she nor the plot quite reach the sublime, but the film is enjoyable nonetheless.

Hinting at contemporary relationship insight without offering any meaningful substance, this breezy romantic comedy is only sporadically engaging.

The New Romantic (the debut feature of writer-director Carly Stone) is too slight, both in terms of theme and general characterization, to match up to Barden's performance (which will probably not get the attention it deserves).

The waif-like Barden is splendid in the central role, using her expressive eyes in the subtlest of ways to convey emotions.

Cannot decide if it wants to be a smutty sitcom or a terrible made-for-TV movie torn from last year's headlines and winds up coming across as a mashup of both.

Setting the bar for the film impossibly high with repetitious references to Nora Ephron classics like Sleepless in Seattle, Stone shows she's got spirit, but maybe not the best judgment, much like her protagonist.
November 09, 2018
A somewhat palatable quasi-rom-com that declares the death of contemporary romance from the get-go, only to try and resurrect it later.

Carly Stone, a first-time writer-director, introduces a startling degree of pain yet lacks the willingness to fully reckon with it.

Mirroring its green protagonist, "The New Romantic" presents an image of sophistication while playing with ideas that are out of its depth.
March 22, 2018
More tragic than funny, but Stone is hoping for laughs - or really, swoons - or maybe just whatever will make audiences happy, an eagerness to please that makes the tone wobble from scene to scene.

The New Romantic follows a very familiar arc, but the path is certainly a pleasant one, thanks to Barden's naturally ebullient performance.
